At precisely 11:00 am, after a thundering overfly by 3 USAF F-15's, the race got under way with Welch leading the driver lineup. One and a half hours later Welch turned the car over to Borlik with Triantos to follow. As day turned to night, the team continued to run well and worked through the driver rotation. Several drivers like Bauer, Triantos and Borlik did double duty, pitting only for fuel and tires.
At night, near the half way mark, the #8 car was rear ended knocking off a muffler. The resulting pit stop put the car 9 laps down. The drivers and crew fought back throughout the night to get the car back on the lead lap.
By the time the sun peaked over the horizon, the team noticed several competitors having their own troubles. At mid morning, the B&B Tantrum team took the lead and continued to leg it out, finishing an astounding 15 laps ahead of the 2nd place car!
For the second consecutive year, the #8 team finished ahead of the Mazda factory backed 2006 model MX-5's (Miata's) with their 20 year old 1986 RX-7!
For the record, the entire team would like to thank the USAF for their support and NASA for continuing to run this prestigious event.
See all of you again in 2007!
